The following local notables were chosen by our class to present on our page: Victoria Ernst, Glen Murray, Judge DesBrisay, Allen Blakeney. VICTORIA ERNST
(Photo Courtesy of DesBrisay Museum) Victoria was the first female doctor in Bridgewater. Victoria was not allowed to work at the hospital because she was a woman. Victoria was never married in her life. She was trying to make enough money as a teacher she gave her father money because he lost everything in two fires. Victoria was born in Bridgewater, but she was 40 years old when she went to college. Victoria owned 40 properties in town when she died at age 84, being the highest taxpayer in Bridgewater. She lived for 84 years.
Judge Mather Byles DesBrisay (Photo: One Hundred Years: A Pictorial History of Bridgewater p. 52.) Mather Byles DesBrisay was known as Judge DesBrisay. He was born March 19, 1828 in Chester, Nova Scotia. Mathers father was Thomas Belcher DesBrisay. His mother was Lucretis Woodward. She was the Daughter of a Halifax merchant. Judge Desbrisay went to school in Dartmouth and Halifax and articled himself as a student at law with Judges Blanchard and James. In 1850 he was admited to the bar of Nova Scotia practicing his profession at Halifax, Chester and Bridgewater. Judge DesBrisay married Ada Harley, they had no children. Judge Desbrisay was the founder of the DesBrisay collection, which dates back to 1880. There were 18 different exhibits. They were cases full of articles. They were mainly specimens of things from around the world. Their private museum was in their house. He would improve his collection whenever he could. Judge Mather Desbrisay died at his home in Bridgewater on April 8, 1900. His was a tragic loss to the people of Lunenburg County. He was one of the County’s most respected citizens. Allen Blakeney (Photo Courtesy of Bridgewater High School) Allen Blakeney was a Rhodes scholar, lawyer, a civil servant, a politician and the premier of Saskatchewan. Blakeney came to politics as an experienced civil servant with a strong commitment to state-led economic development and extensive social-welfare programs. He was born and raised in Bridgewater NS and spent two decades in the politically innovative environment of Saskatchewan before becoming premier. Recruited by T.C. Douglas in 1950, the road scalar became one of the CCF government’s most valuable civil servants, first a legal advisor to the provinces embattled crown corporations, then as a senior official to the Treasury Dept. He was the minister of education, finance of heath in the Douglas and W.S. Lloyd Cabinets, and a key figure in the Opposition. Glen Murray (Photo Courtesy of Bridgewater High School) 1991-1997 Glen Murray played for three different team’s. Boston, Pittsburgh & Los Angles. In 91-92 he played five games with three goals, 1 assist, 4 points & 0 penalty mins. From 92-95 he played full seasons with Boston. The games played were 143, his goals were 26, his assist were 23 his points were 49 & his penalty min were 102. In the 95-96 season he played with Pittsburgh. He played 70 games with 19 goals, 15 assist 34 points & 57 penalty mins. In 96-97 he played with LA ,games 77, goals 16, assist14, points 30,penatly mins. GLEN Murray’s height is 6-3 & he 225lbs he played the rightwing for the LA kings in the 00/01 season his number is 27. He was born in Halifax on November, 1st in 1972. He latter moved with his parents to Bridgewater and played for many years as a Youngster at the Bridgewater Memorial Arena. One of his coaches was Bill McInnis . 00/01 Stanley cup playoffs stats for Glen Murray were gp6,g0,asst2,pim2,ppg1,ppa0,shg0 sha0, shots9, pct0.0 VS. detroit.gp7,g4,a3,pim2,pts5,ppg1,ppa0,shg0,sha0shots25,pct16.0 VS. Colorado. His team beat Detroit Redwings in 6 games in the first round by Colorado in the 7th Game.
